What is your why?
My why is because I think that nature is beautiful and should be shown throughout artwork more. Before I started art this year, I already really enjoyed painting landscapes in my own time so I thought it would be a good idea to pick the theme landscape. I chose impressionism/expressionism landscape because I thought it would be helpful for me to learn about texture, shadowing and the best ways to paint for when I want to paint at home I can improve my finished products. throughout the year I hoped to gain skills and see my improvements while using different media like charcoal and printmaking.
My thumbnail sketches
These were some ideas I sketched up for my linocuts at the start of the year. they relate to my art history because some of them look like Marilyn Webb's artwork. On some of them, I have made bold white lines to separate the sky from the land. Some components of them do relate to my art because in some of my work I used a white gel pen on my second board to separate the land and the sky like Marilyn Webb.
I tried using watercolour to paint some landscapes. I didn't like the outcome because I struggled to get the colours right compared to the picture. I also struggled to layer the watercolour to create the texture of the top of the trees on the hill without blending it all together. I feel like parts of it relate to Marilyn Webb because there were fine and clear lines between the different sections. I also experimented with charcoal sketches. I really enjoyed charcoal sketching and I really like some of the outcomes because I think they turned out well. I used a dry paintbrush to take off some charcoal to lighten it so I could create shading. I also used a wet paintbrush to help me get a darker shade from the charcoal.
Portfolio plan
I forgot to take a photo of my plan before placing stuff on my board. Before I started placing on my board, I put sticky notes on my board indicating when I wanted to place my pieces. This ended up changing lots throughout the year due to art sizing and what different media I chose to do.
Art History
Artist: Marilyn Webb
Name of artwork: evening cloud & the Manuherika river

Composition: The lines and strokes running throughout the artwork create a sense of direction running from the left to the right. the river also adds to this sense of direction because it is to the left at the front and curves around to the right toward the back of the flat land. Majority of the land is flat with small circular rocks while the mountains look shart and triangular.
Setting: This artwork is a rural landscape of New Zealand at the Manuherikia River.
Colour: In this piece of art Marilyn has used the complementary colours orange and blue. The colours of this artwork are blue and orange but in varying shades throughout. The hills look dead and burnt, giving off a dark and empty feeling. The orange and blue constantly fade in and out of each other creating a sense of bringing everything together. The bright and bold colours make this artwork look simplified. The colour in front of the artwork is calm while the colours in the back of the artwork look to be stormy.
Gesture and expression: The lines are bold and directed. Marilyn mainly uses strong bold lines to outline the sections of her work. She uses strong lines and colours to show the power of the earth.
My first board
This is the first panel of my artboard. I started with some photographs. I used one of my photographs to connect my next piece which is a pencil sketch. When I started doing my artwork, I didn't measure any of my pieces so this made it very difficult to manage and place all of my pieces. this means I had to trim lots of my artwork.
The completion of my first board
I am really happy with how my first board has worked out. I really like the colour combinations in it. On my board, I have one black and white landscape which helps link my two charcoal sketches into my board. I don't personally like the watercolour pieces on my board because I don't think they go with my other work as much, I decided to put them in any way because they show I am going to put some of these colour combinations onto my second board as well as some other colours.
My Second board
On my second board, I worked with texture and shading in the two acrylic pieces. I used light colours to show the top of the trees on the hills. I have three digital pieces on my second board. These two pieces started as linocuts that I scanned and put into photoshop. On the first and third digital piece, I played around with putting articles about the port hills fire overtop of my work, I also played with the colours of the hills. For the middle digital piece, I just played with the sound and colour of the piece. I think these pieces helped to connect my first board to my second board well because I used the same background pictures from the linocuts on board one.
